My journey with Catasetum saccatum spans several years, rooted in both personal and professional connections. I first encountered this fascinating orchid years ago in my brother’s greenhouse and was captivated once again when I crossed paths with it years later in a friend’s orchid garden. This botanical artwork of Catasetum saccatum is not merely a documentation of a single species, but a crucial milestone reflecting my decade-long dedication to the scientific illustration of South American orchids. Since 2015, my professional practice has been deeply rooted in the Amazon rainforest. From 2015 to 2022, my work centered on the middle Amazon basin, primarily documenting the genus Cattleya. In 2025, I expanded my research to the treacherous cloud forests of the upper Amazon, shifting my focus to the fascinating subtribe Catasetinae. This painting marks the beginning of this new chapter. Looking ahead, my vision is to systematically document five genera within this subtribe, Catasetum, Cycnoches, Clowesia, Mormodes and Galeandra, capturing over 100 species to build a comprehensive, rigorous visual archive of upper Amazonian orchid diversity.

 

Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, Catasetum saccatum is not currently classified as critically endangered. However, like many epiphytic orchids, its wild populations face escalating threats. Largely due to its popularity and success in ex-situ cultivation among dedicated growers, it is a highly sought-after species among orchid enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. Healthy specimens and unique variations command a premium in trade, making it a prized gem in the botanical community.

 

Because Catasetum saccatum exhibits strong sexual dimorphism (producing highly distinct male and female flowers on separate inflorescences depending on light and environmental conditions), my primary purpose with this scientific illustration was clarity and accurate identification. Within the orchid family, the genus Catasetum stands out due to its unusual sexual dimorphism. Moreover, the male flowers of the exact same species exhibit pronounced morphological variation—a striking sign of advanced evolutionary adaptation. In the past, this high variability frequently caused taxonomical confusion, leading to individuals of the same species being misidentified as distinct taxa. To address this, I have illustrated the diverse appearances of the male flowers as comprehensively as possible within my work, aiming to elucidate this complexity and reduce any potential confusion regarding species identity. I structured the composition in a straightforward diagnostic layout, complete with a legend to guide the viewer through the morphological features: A shows the typical morphology of male flowers, B the dorsal sepal separated from the petals, and C distinct spotting on the labellum (lip).

 

Commonly known as the 'trigger orchid,' Catasetum is celebrated for its highly dynamic and explosive pollination mechanism. When an insect touches the sensitive antennae within the flower, the male apparatus mechanically ejects the pollinaria, launching and adhering it onto the pollinator in a fraction of a second. Capturing the tension of this rapid, kinetic motion within a static scientific illustration represents the technical breakthrough I continuously strive for.

 

In order to precisely render the intricate structures of the blooms, I deliberately omitted any background to ensure that the viewer’s focus remains entirely on the scientific accuracy of the subject. I leveraged the advantages of oil-based colored pencils – they can be applied with a very sharp tip - to illustrate the very detailed shape, structure, and color.

 

Through this artwork, I hope viewers will appreciate the intentionality behind documenting the full lifecycle and morphology of the orchid. Rather than just depicting a beautiful flower, my illustration captures the plant's growth habit, the architecture of the inflorescences, the distinct female flowers, and the structural variations of the male flowers. The creation process itself was an enjoyable experience; because of my deep familiarity with the species, the work progressed smoothly without major challenges, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the pleasure of rendering nature's complex designs.
