TOUR: Guided by Gardens: ASBA Exclusive Behind the Scenes Tour of DBG Herbarium & Library
Few places hold the intersection of art and science as richly as Denver Botanic Gardens, and this specially designed tour for American Society of Botanical Artists members takes you beyond the public garden and into the heart of it. In small rotating groups, participants will move through three rarely accessed spaces at the Freyer — Newman Center: the Helen Fowler Library, a curated archive and circulating collection of rare books and periodicals ; the laboratories where active research and conservation work bring the living collection into sharp scientific focus; and the Herbaria, home to over one hundred thousand preserved vascular plant specimens, fungi and arthropods. Each stop offers an intimate look at how plants are studied, documented and interpreted — and an opportunity to see the tools, collections and expertise that botanical artists have drawn on for centuries. Guided by Gardens staff and scientists, this experience is as much about the creative process as it is about the science behind it.

Techniques Showcase on Stage with Julia Trickey, M. Joy Lemon and Crystal Shin
Three artists demonstrate and discuss on stage with close-ups of their techniques projected onto a large screen.

1:30PM Julia Trickey - Desiccation and Detail
Julia will demonstrate her approach to painting fading specimens, including when and how to apply masking fluid, techniques for recreating delicate papery textures, how to capture the translucency of petals, and how to add details that will enhance the sense of fragility in the subject.

2:30PM M. Joy Lemon - Elevate your Drawing - Intuitive Block-in
Experience the intuitive block-in method, a time-tested technique that hones the eye to perceive and render proportions, shapes, and angles with consistent accuracy and sensitivity through pure observation, without relying on external measuring devices or tools. Through live demonstration and clear explanation, witness how this technique cultivates disciplined observation, strengthens hand-eye coordination, improves line quality, supports emotional regulation during the creative process, and sharpens problem-solving skills. Once mastered, this foundational ability becomes a lifelong asset that artists can refine, strengthen, and build upon throughout their entire career.

3:30PM Crystal Shin -Using Incising Techniques on Complex Veins in Leaves
Creating convincing veins on leaves can be a challenge for botanical artists. Incising is a useful technique to render veins with clarity and precision when using colored pencils. Crystal will demonstrate her approach to this method, employing a variety of tools and techniques to create both prominent veins and subtle venation with realism and refinement.

CLASS Painting Crabapples on Vellum (watercolor) with Denise Walser Kolar
Learn Denise's technique for painting on vellum as we paint beautiful crabapples from Chatfield Farm. Crabapples are a perfect subject for a one-day class as they can be drawn relatively quickly so we can move right on to painting. Students will learn how to paint highlights, reflected light, lost edges, and shadows, and how to achieve effective texture. We will also talk about how to layer colors to get the luminosity that vellum is so well known for. You do not need vellum painting experience to take this class, but basic watercolor skills will be helpful. A handout will be emailed to students before the conference.

CLASS Fall Treasures in Carbon Dust and Coffee with Deborah (Deb) Shaw
CLASS Fall Treasures in Carbon Dust and Coffee with Deborah (Deb) Shaw
Carbon dust is a century-old technique originally developed for medical illustration. “Washes” of dust applied with a dry brush are combined with carbon pencils, resulting in a deep range of beautiful, continuous grayscale tones. Carbon dust techniques are easy to learn and incredibly forgiving. Although mixed media has always been part of the carbon dust repertoire, carbon dust artists also have a history of using coffee as a non-traditional addition. We’ll explore traditional carbon dust techniques and coffee (or watercolor) with Fall subjects. Each participant will receive a “goody bag” of specialty materials to use and take home.

CLASS Dynamic Structure in Botanical Art: Using Harmonic Armature to Guide the Eye with Kelly Leahy Radding
Harmonic Armature—also known as Dynamic Structure—is a classical compositional framework that brings balance, movement, and visual harmony to a work of art. Like the internal structure of a plant, it provides an unseen support system for rhythm and cohesion. In this workshop, botanical artists will explore how diagonals, proportional divisions, and key intersections guide the viewer’s eye and strengthen planning decisions. Working with classic design elements such as form, repetition, and odd-number groupings, participants will learn to create dynamic, intentional compositions while avoiding static or centered layouts.

LECTURE “Building Community Through Food” with Paul Fleischer
LECTURE “Building Community Through Food” with Paul Fleischer
Paul Fleischer started Fleischer Family Farm in 2015 as a side business while still working as a public school teacher.  At that time the farm operated from a 1/18th of an acre lot in Ruby Hill, sold once per month at a small market in a coffee shop parking lot and had a 4 person csa.  Since then, Paul and his wife Cheslie have built the business to one of the larger CSA farms operating in the Denver Metro Area.  Their program now grows intensively and regeneratively on a 2 acre lot in Lakewood, sells directly to their community through a weekly on site farm stand and a local farmers market.  The farm also feeds more than 175 families through their CSA program, has product on shelves in a local grocery store and hosts classes and other agritourism events.  During this conversation, Paul will discuss what it took to grow this program to where it is today and how he and his family continue to work to "Build Community Through Food."

ASBA is committed to the health and safety of conference attendees. ASBA and the Halcyon Hotel at Cherry Creek will follow Health and Safety laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the State of Colorado the city of Denver, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (collectively, the “Regulations”). We will ask conference attendees to agree to comply with all regulations in effect at the time of the conference.

*ASBA does its best to keep costs down, particularly for our Annual Conference. Registration fees are used to cover costs that ASBA incurs for hotel meals, receptions, lecture and workshop room rentals and A/V services as well as transportation to offsite programs. We do not make money off conference registrations. Although we know that our members' costs to attend the conference are substantial, we believe there is still great value in gathering in person, initiating, and building lasting friendships, and sharing our common passion for botanical art - in person!
